Special Thanks to Our Student WEB Day Leaders!

On Friday, August 13th, San Jose Middle School hosted 200+ new students for WEB Day, the first in-person student event in a year.

WEB stands for “Where Everybody Belongs.”  WEB Day is a middle school orientation and transition program that welcomes students new to the school and strives to makes them feel comfortable throughout the year.  The day is designed for all incoming 6th grade students as well as 7th and 8th grade students who are new to San Jose Middle School, including students who participated in VLA last year.

The day gave new Scorpions some valuable time on campus before school starts to meet teachers and staff, get a campus tour, play icebreaker games led by veteran student leaders, pick up their class schedule, and find their lockers.  Afterward, students enjoyed lunch under the dome, provided by the PTA.

An important component of WEB Day is the professional training student and teacher leaders participate in beforehand.  Before WEB Day, student and staff leaders attend the signature WEB peer-mentoring training focused on how to act as positive role models, mentors, and teachers to younger students.

“I was really impressed with the job our student leaders were doing, leading icebreakers and creating a really fun and welcoming atmosphere,” said Principal Mike Casper.  “The training they received made a difference.  We’re grateful to the PTA for providing the funding to make it possible.”

WEB Day is a nationally recognized middle school transition program created by the same company that leads high school “Link Crew” programs.  Schools have reported that the WEB middle school transition program has enhanced anti-bullying efforts, reduced discipline issues, and increased school safety, creating an improved school climate and a greater sense of connection for the whole school.

“This is an invaluable program and a great start to the new year,” says Vice Principal Whitney McEachern. “Looking forward to seeing the rest of our students!”
