Private tutoring is a powerful way to support your child’s learning and set them up for success. Designed to fit each student’s needs, private tutoring can accelerate learning beyond their classroom, help them understand concepts missed, or help a student learn to manage the increased workload of middle school. In these challenging times, students need individual attention more than ever. The PTA is pleased to subsidize the cost of this valuable program.
Financial Aid
The PTA offers Financial Aid to help with the cost of Private Tutoring. We want all students to have the opportunity to succeed at their highest level.
Guidelines
Getting Matched
Parents and Tutors will receive a “You’ve Been Matched” email from the Tutoring Coordinator to introduce you. Tutors and parents are encouraged to connect directly to discuss the student’s needs and confirm appointments each week.
Scheduling
In general, tutoring sessions should typically take place on a weekly basis in the assigned time slot until six sessions are completed. Sessions will not take place on school holidays or Staff Development Days (shown on the NUSD District Calendar). The Tutoring Coordinator will send an introductory email to connect tutors and parents. After that, tutors and parents should confirm sessions directly.
Rescheduling or Makeup Sessions
If needed, you can reschedule sessions or schedule makeup sessions for other times by coordinating between tutors and parents directly. Please always inform the Tutoring Coordinator if a session is rescheduled. Bear in mind that a room needs to be arranged in advance.
Location
Tutoring sessions are scheduled to take place in Room B5. Students and tutors are instructed to meet there. If the classroom door is locked, please see the school office or a janitor to have it opened. For now, please keep all sessions on the SJMS campus. In the future, we may be able to adjust this so you can meet with students at a café or home.
Before each session
Tutors coming from off-campus are asked to check in at the school front office with Karen Dugdale. She will make sure you can get into the room. Note that Karen typically leaves and closes the school office at 3:30pm so try to get there by 3:25pm if possible. SJMS Teachers serving as tutors do not need to check in at the school office.
After each session
Tutors are asked to complete the Tutoring Post-Session Report after every session. This form serves as a timesheet, and also provides a vehicle for tutors to give feedback to Students, Parents, and the Tutoring Program Coordinator.
If you run into any problems
Please feel free to call or text Tutoring Coordinator Jen Jayme at (408) 455-5643, or email Jen at [email protected]. Also feel free to put any non-urgent notes in the post-session report.
