Here’s What Happened…

Band Performance

We enjoyed a wonderful performance by some band students who played and sang “Three Little Birds,” “Octopus’s Garden,” and “This Land Is Your Land” on ukelele, and an impressive solo of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” on electric guitar.  Our music program is amazing and we’re grateful to Mrs. Dalbesio for her fantastic leadership!

Consent Agenda

Members approved the Consent Agenda which included (1) minutes from last meeting, (2) checks to be ratified, and (3) plans for Enrichment Activities in Winter 2022.

Reports and updates were given on the following standing topics

  • Treasurer – Liza Aoanan shared the Treasurer’s Report showing income of $337.85 and expenses of $5,175.43 reflecting Hispanic Heritage Celebration, Halloween Movie Night and Enrichment Activity Instructor pay.
  • Principal Casper reported:
    • The school is hosting acclaimed stand-up comedian and youth motivator Michael Pritchard as an inspirational speaker for the students on 12/3.  Each grade will have its own assembly focused on socio-emotional skills, good choices, kindness, manners, and teenage issues.  This was prompted by some kids getting into trouble in the community and some very inappropriate speech and behavior seen around the campus.  The goal is to promote appropriate behavior and a positive school culture.
    • Monthly student awards will restart in December.  Teachers will hand out one award per month for academic progress, good behavior, etc (teachers choice)
    • Plans are underway to increase academic support during the students’ “Tutorial” period, with a focus on equity.
    • SJMS gave a presentation to the NUSD Board this week featuring the 8th grade Colonial debate.  It went very well and received a standing ovation.
    • Board has approved a new turf field for San Jose Middle School, to be installed in Summer 2023.
  • New Grants from School Fuel – President Jen Jayme brought two checks from School Fuel for last year’s Tour of Novato proceeds ($6,468) and new grants ($5,000) awarded for Enrichment Activities ($3,000) and a subscription to Scholastic Science World for the Science Department ($2,000).
  • Auction – The Auction is scheduled for March 12, 2022 to be held at Hopmunk Tavern.  The committee had a first meeting and decided on an 80’s theme.  Lucy has shared the solicitation list and the team will begin securing items.  Help is needed!
